Eastern Medical Support is extremely proud to have been a sponsor for the 2013 Hosner Fitness 5K Run for Recreation on April 14th. Despite cold, rain & snow the turnout was amazing and all proceeds benefited the City of Amsterdam Park and Recreation Programs. Great job everyone!

Eastern Medical Support was proud to support the efforts of the Johnstown Police Benevolent Association and St. Baldrick’s Foundation with two shaved heads and a $500 donation.
St. Baldrick’s head-shaving events began as a challenge between businessmen and have grown from one event in 2000 to over 1,300 events in 2012, raising critical funds for childhood cancer research. Events take place in pubs, restaurants, schools, churches, parks, malls, military bases, firehouses and any other place you can imagine.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for life-saving childhood cancer research and funds more in childhood cancer grants than any organization except for the U.S. government.

DOT OFFICE OF DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY AND COMPLIANCE NOTICE
Recently, some states passed initiatives to permit use of marijuana for so-called “recreational” purposes.
We have had several inquiries about whether these state initiatives will have an impact upon the Department of Transportation’s longstanding regulation about the use of marijuana by safety‐sensitive transportation employees – pilots, school bus drivers, truck drivers, train engineers, subway operators, aircraft maintenance personnel, transit fire‐armed security personnel, ship captains, and pipeline emergency response personnel, among others.
We want to make it perfectly clear that the state initiatives will have no bearing on the Department of Transportation’s regulated drug testing program. The Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40 – does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including marijuana, for any reason.
Therefore, Medical Review Officers (MROs) will not verify a drug test as negative based upon learning that the employee used “recreational marijuana” when states have passed “recreational marijuana” initiatives.
We also firmly reiterate that an MRO will not verify a drug test negative based upon information that a physician recommended that the employee use “medical marijuana” when states have passed “medical marijuana” initiatives.
It is important to note that marijuana remains a drug listed in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. It remains unacceptable for any safety‐sensitive employee subject to drug testing under the Department of Transportation’s drug testing regulations to use marijuana.
We want to assure the traveling public that our transportation system is the safest it can possibly be.

Earlier this month, President Obama signed the Synthetic Drug Abuse Prevention Act of 2012 into law as part of the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act. The legislation bans synthetic compounds commonly found in synthetic marijuana (“K2″ or “Spice”), synthetic stimulants (“Bath Salts”), and hallucinogens. The new law will make it easier for law enforcement agencies to take action against manufacturers, importers, and sellers of the above products.

Justin Smith is the winner of the Public Safety Hero of the Quarter award. Given by 1st on Scene Fire & Emergency Services and Eastern Medical Support, Justin’s nomination received the most votes out of those received. Below is what his nominee had to say:
“Justin Smith is a member of the Fort Plain Fire Department, he has been a member since he turned 14 years old and was a junior member. He is now the training officer and provides training for his fellow members. Hisgoal is to provide quality important updated training to keep his fellow firefighters safe.
Justin is also a Paramedic with GAVAC. He is a hard worker and continually takes extra classes and takes extra hours when asked. He has received a life saving award from GAVAC and he loves his job.
Justin is also a Deputy Coordinator for EMS of Montgomery County. He continually responds to emergencies throughout the County to assist other agencies in an attempt to keep all safe and healthy.
The unique thing about Justin is that he is only 21 years old. He has an associates degree from SUNY Cobleskill and continues to work hard with learning as much as he can. It is rare to see a young person so dedicated to a profession and service. I am proud to have Justin as my son and work with me at many different types of emergency scenes including as a fellow firefighter. Please consider Justin for this award as he is a hero and deserves it. Thank you!
